Stand Up For Public Schools: A Candlelight Vigil

  • Across America

The DeVos confirmation vote is tomorrow. The Democrats are not giving up: "Democrats will hold the floor for the next 24 hours, until the final vote, to do everything we can to persuade just one more Republican to join us," Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.)

Tonight, at 7 PM ET, we hold a candlelight (flashlight/smartphone light) vigil for public education at schools across the country.

7 PM EASTERN/6 PM CENTRAL/5 PM MOUNTAIN TIME/4 PM PACIFIC TIME

Actions are forming everywhere. PLEASE ORGANIZE YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY TO STAND UP! Or just show up at the local school down the block!

Please RSVP and post details about your action -- with a school picture, if you can -- and tag it #StandUpForPublicSchools #StopDeVos #PublicSchoolsPublicGood to spread the word even farther.

WHY STAND UP?

Did you attend a public school?
Do your children or your neighbors’ children attend a public school?
Did a public school teacher change your life?
Do you know that 90 percent of American students attend public schools?
There is no other institution in America that is there for every child.
Are you there for public schools?

Public schools are the bedrock of our Democracy. We deserve a U.S. Secretary of Education who understands public education, who knows our schools and who believes in the PUBLIC. We are the public, and these are our schools. A NO vote on the nomination of Betsy DeVos for the Secretary of Education is a YES vote for our country, our democracy, and our future.
